Project Brief
The objective is to produce a CO2-neutral energy feedstock in the form of biomass (wood pellets). Production will occur in a sustainable, closed-loop environment. The customers are to be Europe’s CHP plants. Sustain Energy plans to establish a 15,000-hectra poplar Energy Forest at the site of a deterioated formar coal mine in the Nothern Czech Republic.

The Outcome
The Energy Forest is planted in circulating fifields to maintain annual harvests over a five-year cycle. Annual production is estimated to be 255,000 tons of wood pellets. Under the closed production model, Sustain Energy maintains full ownership of all stages in the value chain (raw materials, prduction, supply and distribution)

Why nominated?
The Energy Forest replaces coal mining with reforestation and CO2- neutral clean energy production. Also the production facilities for the Energy Forrest are powered by renewable wind and biomass electricity and use proven technologies while reusing existing coal-mining infrastructure.
